The Rotary Club of Festac Town in conjunction with Rotary Clubs of Greenfield Estate Festac Town, Festac Metropolitan, Rotary Club of Amuwo, Festac Central, Satellite Town, and Lagos West has given free medical treatments to some patients within and outside Lagos State.
Speaking during the program, the President of the Rotary Club of Festac Town, Rotarian Demola Martins, said the project is a medical outreach. “What we do is to bring together patients within our community to give them some form of medical operation in four areas.”
The clubs came together last year to start the medical outreach, and because of the testimonies they had, they decided to do the second edition.
They intend on performing medical operations in four areas of diagnosed medical conditions – Herniotomy, Lumpectomy, Herniorrhaphy, and Myomectomy, the removal of fibroids. All these clubs have come together without government funding, putting together individual funds to make it happen.
So far, they have operated on 20 patients out of the 70 patients they are going to operate on for this particular Rotary year.
The AMC Medical Centre, one of the best within Amuwo Odofin, has partnered with them to collect as little as nothing. This hospital accommodated them last year, and the medical director gave his consent to come next year. They only asked them to buy drugs, and doctors were brought in from outside the hospital. The hospital has 19 beds, and they gave all the beds without collecting anything from them.
According to Rotarian Abiola Ektson from the Rotary Club of Festac Town, one of the women who benefited from the surgery last year has given birth to a baby boy.
Chair, Women in Rotary, District 9111, Rotarian Lara Akinsanya, said the patients would soon be discharged to make room for other patients to be operated on. “Once you are okay, no complications, we are going to discharge you so that we can admit the new ones,” she said.
The District Governor, District 9111, Rotarian Wole Kukoyi, called on the government, well-meaning Nigerians, and philanthropic organizations to support Rotary’s humanitarian initiatives, stressing that such partnerships were crucial in making life easier and more meaningful for the less privileged in society.
