World Cancer Day 2025 was observed in Amuwo Odofin by the Amuwo Odofin Local government joining forces with the United States International Visitors Leadership Program Alumni Association (IVLPAA), and Oncopadi, to raise awareness to cancer and promote early detection.
The event, themed “United by Unique,” had the President of IVLPAA, Mr Adedayo Oketola, emphasize the need for collaborating to fight cancer.
Executive Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, Engr. Dr. Valentine Buraimoh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling cancer, calling for sustained efforts in prevention and treatment. He assured the community of the government’s efforts in raising awareness and improving healthcare services.
The event featured a breast cancer screening initiative led by Ms. Deborah Oladimeji, Community Project Manager for Sebeccly Cancer Care. Free breast screenings, mammograms, and ultrasounds were provided to women.
Also, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Oncopadi, Dr Omolola Salako, while highlighting the disproportionate impact of cancer on women, stressed the importance of community-based awareness and screening.
Meanwhile, beyond the physical battle, a psychiatrist and Medical Director at Pinnacle Medical Services, Dr Maymunah Yusuf Kadiri, shed light on the mental health challenges faced by cancer patients.
Kadiri, using the acronym CANCER, broke down the emotional struggles to mean: C – Coping with uncertainty, A – Adjustment difficulties, N – Negative emotions, C – Cognitive burden (“Chemo Brain”), E – Emotional and social isolation, and R – Role and identity changes.
The event concluded with a call to action for collective efforts to combat cancer.
