As part of efforts to reduce unemployment in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, a lawmaker representing Ward “K” in the local government, Hon. Adewumi Ogunshina has flagged off a skill acquisition and empowerment training programme for youths in the area.
Unveiling the programme, Hon. Ogunshina said that the programme was in line with his campaign promises to the people of his Ward and would go a long way to improve the lot of beneficiaries.
While he commended the Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin LGA, Engr. Valentine Buraimoh for his pro-activeness in addressing the issue of youth unemployment, the lawmaker said that the rate of unemployment was quite high and necessitated the need for corporate bodies and individuals to partner with the government.
He assured that each trainee would also be empowered with requisite tools to help them establish a business in accordance with their training.
“We will assist them to set up their businesses and we will also create a strategy to monitor their progress. I will want to appeal to the beneficiaries to see the scheme as an opportunity for self-employment.
“I don’t feel comfortable seeing youths begging for financial assistance. Ours is to empower them to be independent. No one gets rich by begging that is why we have come with an enduring legacy of making them financially independent,” the lawmaker said.
Speaking earlier, the Council Chief , who lamented the dearth of youths with prerequisite skills, commended the lawmaker for the initiative.
He tasked the youths to see this opportunity as a golden one and should key into it.
The immediate past Chairman of Amuwo Odofin LGA, Comrade Ayodele Adewale who was represented by Engr. Cecil Okereke commended the organizer of the programme, noting that all hands must be on deck to redirect the mindset of our youths towards nation building.
