The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has set July 12, 2025, for the highly anticipated local government elections across the state.
In a statement released on Friday, Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that voters will elect new chairpersons and councillors for 57 local government areas (LGAs) and 376 wards across the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Ojo explained that the date was chosen to ensure there is no leadership gap as the tenure of the current council administrations comes to a close. Should the need arise, a re-run election will be held on July 19.
“This marks the official start of the electoral process,” said Ojo, adding that political parties should begin collecting nomination forms at the LASIEC headquarters. He also announced that a meeting with all registered political parties is scheduled for Tuesday.
The election guidelines will be made public on April 17, with campaigns and rallies set to begin on April 18 and conclude by July 9. Political parties will have from June 18 to June 25 to submit nomination forms for candidates, including those standing in place of withdrawn candidates or running unopposed.
Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), Chairman of LASIEC, assured that the commission will uphold a fair and transparent process, emphasizing that every candidate and party will have a level playing field.
“We are committed to a free, fair, and credible election,” Okikiolu-Ighile stated. “We urge all political parties and aspirants to follow the electoral timetable closely.”
The last local government election in Lagos took place on July 24, 2021, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 377 councillorship seats. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) each won a single councillorship seat, preventing a perfect APC sweep.
With the election just around the corner, LASIEC is focused on ensuring a smooth and credible process that reflects the people’s will.
