Blackout Looms in Amuwo as Residents Grapple with Unstable Power

Residents of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area have expressed deep frustration over the worsening electricity supply across the community, as many streets and neighbourhoods continue to experience prolonged blackouts and irregular power supply.

For several days, residents say electricity supply has been poor or completely unavailable in some parts of Festac Town, Satellite Town and surrounding areas, disrupting daily activities, businesses and household routines. Small business owners, artisans and home-based workers have been particularly affected, with many forced to rely on generators at higher operating costs.

According to the electricity distribution companies serving the area, the situation is linked to a significant drop in power generation on the national grid. The Disco operators explained that gas supply constraints, resulting from vandalism of gas pipelines, have reduced the amount of electricity available for distribution nationwide.

The development was also communicated by the Nigerian Independent System Operator, which confirmed that the reduced generation has led to widespread load shedding across the country. As a result, distribution companies have been unable to supply power consistently, leaving some communities with limited hours of electricity and others with no supply at all.

In Amuwo-Odofin, residents have described the situation as exhausting and unsustainable, especially amid rising fuel prices and economic pressures. Many have called on relevant authorities to urgently address the issue of pipeline vandalism and strengthen energy infrastructure to prevent recurring disruptions.

As of the time of filing this report, there is no clear timeline for full restoration of stable power supply. Residents say they hope the situation improves soon, as prolonged outages continue to affect livelihoods and quality of life across the local government area.
