Lagos State Government has announced a 50% reduction in fares on the Blue Line rail system for Thursday, September 4, 2025, in celebration of its second anniversary.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement via his official X handle on Wednesday, noting that the Blue Line has transported over five million commuters safely since its launch in 2023.
“Two years ago, we took a bold step with the launch of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line. Today, as I look back on how far we have come, I feel a deep sense of pride and gratitude. In these two years, the Blue Line has carried more than five million passengers safely, without a single accident,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He highlighted the improved efficiency of the system, with trains now running every 10 minutes, making over 90 trips daily, and drastically cutting travel time for thousands of Lagos residents
The 13-kilometer Phase 1 of the Blue Line, which runs from Marina to Mile 2, was completed in 2023 and has since served as a vital lifeline for commuters along the axis. Mile 2, being a key gateway for Amuwo-Odofin residents, has seen increased accessibility to the Lagos Island business district.
Construction of Phase 2, a 14-kilometer extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is ongoing under the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). This phase will directly serve Amuwo-Odofin residents with new stations at Festac, Alakija, and Trade Fair, before extending further to Volkswagen, LASU, and Okokomaiko.
The Mazamaza Bridge will be demolished and rebuilt after tests revealed it could not safely support rail operations while two new bridges the Satellite Bridge and the LASU Bridge will be constructed with a lifespan of over 75 years and a 400,000-square-meter depot at Okokomaiko will serve as the central hub for maintenance and future expansion.
For communities around Festac and Amuwo-Odofin, the Blue Line promises not just improved mobility but also economic growth, reduced travel stress, and increased real estate value along the rail corridor.
