So news people. commuters who use the LAGBUS and other BRT services in Lagos State would experience new fares from March 1st which would affect the 61 routes of LAGBUS.
This was announced on Monday, February 13, 2017, by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode through the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abiodun Dabiri who shared the new fares of the bus operators with newsmen.
Thousands of Lagos residents queue up daily to make use of the buses to enjoy lower fares and use the BRT to beat gridlock in the city due to their use of dedicated lanes.
With the increment set to take effect on March 1, commuters who board BRT buses from the Festac to CMS will now pay N250 (Two hundred and Fifty naira) instead of the old fee of N120 (One hundred and twenty naira).
According to Engr. Dabiri, explaining the increase. He said.
The 20 – 50 percent increase in fare is as a result of the current economic downturn which has consequently escalated all costs related to operation of the Public transport beyond any financial forecast or projection.
“The current financial crunch, however, has seen average cost of operations increase to up to about 110 percent. With cost of fueling going up by 71 percent, oil prices up by 64 percent, tyre costs up to 90 percent, continued operations is thereby threatened.
“In view of this, and with government responsibility to avert a collapse of the franchise scheme which currently serves over 500,000 commuters daily, the Lagos State Government had to consider the request of the operators for an upward review of bus fares. It is important to note that current prices on some of these schemes have stayed constant for mor than six years for some operators.”
He also explained that the current Government is focused on a strategic reform of the public transport in order to create a world-class public transport infrastructure and support for operations that is modern, cost-effective, safe and sustainable on the long run.
He appealed to commuters to show understanding as the new fares take effect.
So would you still patronize the BRT Buses after March 1st ?
