Chinese Community Celebrates New Yam Festival In Amuwo, Gives Scholarship

In line with the cultural relationships between Nigeria and China, the Igbo community in Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos State, in collaboration with the HuaXing Arts Troupe Nigeria and the Chinese Community in Lagos, recently celebrated the 2024 New Yam Festival through shared cultural experiences.

The New Yam Festival signifies the end of the farming season and the beginning of a new cycle of abundance and prosperity. The festival showcased the cutting and eating of yams and a rich tapestry of cultural performances, such as the traditional Igbo War dances, mesmerizing masquerades, the energetic Chinese Lion dance, and the Waist drum dance, among other captivating performances.

The colorful event spectacle, with sons and daughters of the Igbo community, dressed in their traditional attires, added to the festive atmosphere. A significant highlight of the celebration was the presentation of N100,000 in educational support to 10 students from Amuwo Odofin council.

The Eze Nidigbo of Amuwo Odofin, Eze Augustine Sunday Ojukwu, who welcomed all guests, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and unity.

HRH Ojukwu said: “As we gather to celebrate the bountiful harvest that God has blessed us with, we are also celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria and China, which is the enduring bonds of friendship and unity that bind us together. “It is a moment for us to give thanks, to reflect on our journey, and to renew our commitment to our community and our values.

“Watching the vibrant display of our cultural heritage brings joy to my heart; these performances are not just entertainment, they are a testament to our shared history and unity in diversity.”

In his remarks, the Nwanne Di Namba of Amuwo Odofin, Chief Eric Ni, who was also the co-chairman of the event, praised the host community.

Ni said: “This collaboration is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together with mutual respect and understanding.

“Seeing a Chinese man honored with a chieftaincy title in Nigeria has shown that we, the Chinese, are good friends to our host communities, and this also shows that our strength lies in our unity.

“Giving has become part of us. Recently, the Chinese Community gave scholarships to some Nigerian students to celebrate Nigeria and China National Day, adding to various scholarships and support that we have given in education, sports, health, and entertainment.

“Let’s continue to build bridges, support one another, and celebrate our shared humanity, in keeping the good relationships between China and Nigeria.”

This year’s New Yam Festival celebrates the bountiful harvest and also strengthens the bonds between Nigeria and China through shared cultural experiences.
