Despite a steady downpour on Monday morning August 4th 2025, the Church of Pentecost, Anglican Communion in FESTAC Town, Lagos was filled with warmth, laughter, and heartfelt tributes as family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate Dame Rebecca Aikhomu, widow of the late military Vice President, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, on her 85th birthday.
Admiral Aikhomu, who served as deputy to General Ibrahim Babangida, passed away in 2011. But his wife, affectionately known for her grace and generosity, has continued to be a beacon of light within her community.
A Virtuous Woman Honoured
During the special thanksgiving service, members of the congregation described Mrs. Aikhomu as a virtuous woman with an unwavering commitment to humanity. Many spoke of her as a shining light whose acts of kindness have touched countless lives over the decades.
In his homily, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. James Olusola Odedeji, praised the octogenarian for her selfless nature and her dedication to making a positive difference.
“Dame Aikhomu is a woman who finds fulfillment in service to others,” he said, urging her to continue leading a Christ-centered life. He commended her as a benefactor to the church and advised the congregation to emulate her example of faith and service.
Family’s Joy and Gratitude
Speaking on behalf of the family, her daughter, Mrs. Benita Nimmyel, expressed deep gratitude to God for keeping her mother alive, healthy, and strong.
“It’s a wonderful celebration for us all,” she said. “My mother has endured challenges, losing her husband and her son but yet she remains steadfast in faith. Seeing so many people here despite the rain is proof of the love and respect she has earned.”
Describing her mother as a “mother to all,” Benita also spoke fondly of her patience and generosity:
“She has a big heart for everyone. Her patience is something I’m still praying to inherit.”
Dame Aikhomu’s Words of Wisdom
In a brief address, the celebrant thanked guests for honouring her and urged everyone to remain God-fearing and rooted in Christ. “The Lord sees everything,” she reminded them with a warm smile.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The service also drew prominent figures from Lagos’ security community, including Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh; Commander, 9 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Olawale Oyekola; and Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Nimmyel, among others.
It was a morning where the rain outside only seemed to magnify the warmth inside — a celebration not just of 85 years of life, but of a legacy of love, service, and faith.
