How livable is Lagos ?
So in a recent 2022 Global Liveability Index, Lagos State has been ranked 171 out of 172 countries in the list of most liveable cities in the world for the first quarter of 2022.
Surprised right ? well , According to the index published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the world’s leader in global business intelligence, Damascus (Syria) and Tripoli (Libya) continue to languish at the bottom of the list along with Lagos (Nigeria) as they face social unrest, terrorism and conflict.
This index which is published revealed that Vienna regained its customary position as the number one. Canadian and European cities dominated the top ten.
“The EIU further highlighted the top five most liveable cities in the world as Vienna in Austria, Copenhagen in Denmark, Zurich in Switzerland, Calgary in Canada and Vancouver in Canada.
A large number of people are not happy about the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranking, and are querying the metrics used in ranking, some experts in the environment industry sector have expressed their opinions, pointing out things the government need to work on to improve Liveability in Lagos.
Those in support of the ranking blamed it on the huge infrastructural gap, high and uncontrolled population, congestion, poor housing, security, inadequate open spaces, lack of portable water, poor sanitation and inadequate public transportation. Those in opposition claimed it’s inappropriate to rank Lagos among war-torn cities
