Students from Amuwo-Odofin and beyond who school at Lagos State University (LASU) are caught in the middle of an ongoing strike that has now drawn the intervention of the Lagos State Government.
Since Thursday, July 31, academic and non-academic staff under LASU’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) have been on indefinite strike over welfare issues, shutting down classrooms and offices.
Now, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, says the state is appealing to union leaders to suspend the action and return to dialogue a move that could decide how quickly learning resumes for thousands of students from our community.
“The government acknowledges the concerns raised… however, we urge the unions to consider suspending the strike to give room for continued dialogue,” Sule said in a statement on Sunday.
With many LASU students living in Festac, Satellite Town, Mile 2, and other parts of Amuwo, the strike has disrupted academic schedules and stalled activities for families and businesses linked to the university.
Sule confirmed that high-level meetings with the unions including ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU have already taken place with the Head of Service and the Ministry of Establishments and Training. Both sides agreed on the need to prevent further disruption while the government works on the demands.
He reassured that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to the welfare of university staff and the future of LASU students.
