The Lagos State Waste Management in conjunction with the Lagos State Task Force team has been on a massive crackdown on market cleanliness in Lagos state recently.
Three markets around Amuwo-Odofin environs were affected by this move, Alaba International Market, Tradefair, and Alaba Rago.
The traders of the Trade Fair and Tradefair Market were met with a surprise on Monday the 23rd of October as they got to their various shops and were not able to enter their shops.
The market was said to have been in contravention of several waste management guidelines, such as indiscriminate waste disposal, non-payment for waste disposal, absence of designated waste points, lack of waste receptacles for proper containment, as well as an unsatisfactory state of drainage systems, and despite repeated notices, the market authorities failed to take corrective action, which led to the sealing.
According to traders, no notice was served, and a section like Balogun in the Trade Fair Market was reported to be very dirty, but not all sections of the market are in the same state of disarray, the electronics section, fancy section, and furniture section in Alaba International Market were the areas sealed by LAWMA.
Alaba Rago was sealed on Wednesday, October 25th, and market owners took the initiative themselves to clean up their environment after the clampdown. Although there were protests by the traders in these market areas, complaining about the crippling of their business without initial notice.
