A brink of hope and light appears to have come to the Festac Town estate, Amuwo-Odofin LGA, Lagos state. The Federal Housing Authority, led by the Managing Director, Mr. Oyetunde Ojo, has begun rehabilitating some roads in Festac Town.
Recall that for more than two years, residents of Festac Town have lamented on the state of the roads. The roads in the estate have deteriorated. Recently, The FHA started some rehabilitation of some areas in Lagos. This began after their meeting with the FTRA and other stakeholders. They are starting with 1st Avenue.
Mr Ojo spoke to some stakeholders. He indicated that the rehabilitation will occur in phases. The aim is to tackle the town’s infrastructural decay. Ojo stated that “restoring the glory of Festac Town has gone beyond mere rhetoric.” He added that the restoration will be accompanied by visible actions.
He noted that Festac Town is more than just an estate. It is a national monument. He added that the FHA is committed to restoring its lost glory. He urged residents to cooperate with the FHA by paying their statutory fees. The Authority needs these funds to operate independently of government appropriations.
On the ongoing rehabilitation work, Ojo said that “the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gates will be addressed. This will start with the demolition of the old 1st gate and the erection of a new modern structure. They will clear all illegal structures on that axis. Solar street lights will be installed on the stretch of 1st Avenue from the 1st gate. This will extend to the junction of 11th Road. The median will be cleared and kept clean. Palliative repairs will be conducted on the inward and outward roads of the 1st gate.”
The MD also mentioned “the repairs of the 3.2km stretch of 2nd Avenue, which will cost about 7 billion Naira.” He added that the FHA will seek to influence this through the Federal Government. Palliative jobs will be done to keep it in use.
