Amuwo-Odofin came alive on Sunday, May 25th 2025 as residents joined the Nigerian Navy to celebrate its 69th anniversary with a heartfelt interdenominational thanksgiving service held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Navy Town, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin LGA.
The event brought together top military officials, naval families, community leaders, and locals, all united in gratitude for nearly seven decades of service and sacrifice by the Navy. Amongst the congregation was the chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Emmanuel Ogalla, who worshipped with the congregation, used the moment to reaffirm the Navy’s commitment to maritime security, regional leadership, and personnel welfare while spotlighting several upcoming projects that will benefit both the Navy and the local Amuwo-Odofin community.
“This week, we’re commissioning three ships, three helicopters, and several office buildings and facilities. More platforms are coming to boost our operations,” the Admiral announced.
He emphasized the Navy’s focus on welfare and capacity development, adding that new housing efforts are in place to tackle accommodation challenges an issue also affecting many military families living in and around Amuwo-Odofin.
“We are prioritising infrastructure and personnel welfare because we know that shelter is a basic need,” he added.
Navy Town’s Growing Importance
With the establishment of a new Station Operational Command in Makurdi and expansion of the Nigerian Navy Marine Unit, Vice Admiral Ogalla painted a picture of a Navy evolving to meet 21st-century threats and Amuwo-Odofin remains a key location in that national strategy.
He also acknowledged the strong support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as a “consistent ally” of the Nigerian Navy.
A Service Filled with Praise, Reflection, and Togetherness
The thanksgiving service wasn’t just a formal event, it felt like a true Amuwo-Odofin family gathering. Uniformed officers, civilians, church leaders, and families joined hands in worship and gratitude.
Preaching the homily titled “TOGETHER,” Very Rev. Fr. (Capt) Richmond Diala urged Nigerians to appreciate the strength in unity, especially in trying times.
“This celebration is a call to consciousness. What has kept the Navy strong? What has kept Nigeria going? It’s togetherness,” he preached.
The message struck a deep chord with the congregation, many of whom are long-time residents of Navy Town and the broader Amuwo-Odofin area. He reminded everyone that even in the midst of challenges, Nigeria remains united and that’s worth celebrating.
“A good Christian cannot be a bad soldier,” he added, reminding everyone that spiritual strength and duty go hand-in-hand.
Community Takes the Spotlight
Senior naval officers, many of whom live within or work around Amuwo-Odofin, actively participated in the service. Readings were delivered by Rear Admirals SU Gombe and MG Oamen, while other Navy officers led prayers and songs of praise.
Following the church service, guests were treated to a tour of newly completed projects in Navy Town, including a multi-purpose hall named in honour of the Chief of Naval Staff.
For many Amuwo-Odofin residents, it wasn’t just a military celebration, it was a proud moment for the community, a reminder of the strategic and cultural role Navy Town continues to play in Nigeria’s defence story.
A Shared Future
As the Nigerian Navy moves toward its 70th year, Vice Admiral Ogalla called for unity and prayers for the Navy, the military, and the country at large:
“Let us remain steadfast in prayer, knowing that with God and with unity, we will continue to sail forward.”
