President Muhammadu Buhari has yesterday signed the “Not Too Young To Run” bill into law.
Nigerians who are aged 30 can now run for office as the number one citizen of Nigeria and other elected offices such as Governor, Councillor ,house of reps and even local government chairman in Nigeria.
Following the signing, the law reduces the age qualification for the electable positions .
Not Too Young To Run Age Limits in Nigeria
- President from 40 to 30;
- Governor from 35 to 30;
- Senator from 35 to 30;
- House of Representatives membership from 30 to 25
- State House of Assembly membership from 30 to 25.
The new law is aimed at relaxing some of the stringent and discriminatory provisions of the constitution.
Recall that the bill was passed by the National Assembly in 2017 to alter Sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the constitution.
Furthermore, independent candidates who chose to run for elective positions are covered in the new law as the Nigerian lawmakers also approved independent candidature.
Since its passage in July 2017 by the National Assembly, about 25 states, representing more than two-thirds of the country’s 36 states, had adopted the bill as at March ending.
The development has since generated massive reactions from different sections of Nigerian social media with users applauding the president for signing the bill into law.
