In a determined move to restore order and improve road safety, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) has intensified its clampdown on commercial motorcyclists operating on restricted routes.
During a recent enforcement exercise on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the agency stormed key areas of Amuwo-Odofin LGA, including the Mile 2 Bridge, Agboju, and Apple Junction in Festac, where they seized a total of 69 motorcycles. These zones have witnessed a noticeable return of okada operators, despite the existing ban under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Speaking on the operation, CSP Shola Jejeloye Akerele, who led the team, stated that the activities of these defiant operators not only violate state laws but also pose a serious threat to the safety and sanity of the public space.
“We’ve observed a growing disregard for the law in these areas. These operators have returned to the roads, endangering pedestrians and other road users, especially during peak hours,” CSP Akerele said.
He further explained that all 69 motorcycles impounded during the exercise will be forfeited to the State through the courts, in line with legal procedures.
Residents of the affected areas expressed mixed feelings over the crackdown. While many appreciated the return of law enforcement presence to restore sanity, others noted the economic struggles that might have driven the riders back on the roads.
“We understand that times are hard,” said Mr. Olumide Akanbi, a shop owner at Agboju Market. “But safety must come first. Some of these okadas are reckless — they ride against traffic and have caused a lot of accidents.”
The Taskforce reiterated that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure full compliance with the State’s transport regulations and warned that there will be no room for compromise.
“Our duty is to protect lives and enforce laws that make Lagos a functional city,” CSP Akerele added. “We will continue to carry out these operations and make sure our roads are safe for all.”
As Lagos continues its journey towards becoming a safer and more organised megacity, residents are encouraged to cooperate with the authorities and report any illegal activities in their neighbourhoods.
