The 5th edition of Amuwo Games wrapped up on Sunday evening, November 23rd 2025 after a month long competition across over 13 sports and over 200 athletes participating in various categories.
With the kind of energy only Amuwo can deliver, From the loud cheers at Iman College to the proud faces of families and supporters who came out in numbers, the finale felt less like a sports event and more like a festival of community pride.
The Closing Ceremony, which held at Iman College, Amuwo-Odofin, brought together athletes, residents, and notable guests, including Hon. Stella Osafile of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Oluwaseyi Adegoke-Adeyemo of Inside Watch Africa, representatives from the tournament sponsors, and Miss Chinyere from the Lagos State Sports Commission. Their presence added an official glow to an event that has grown into one of the most anticipated gatherings in Amuwo Odofin.
By the time the final medals were tallied, the Festac Bulls stood tall as overall champions , a moment that drew loud applause from the crowd. With 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze, the Bulls sealed their spot at the top after weeks of tough competition. The GRA Rhinos followed closely with 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze, while the Mile 2 Hawks finished strong with 3 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals.
What made this year’s edition even more memorable was the theme: Cancel Scam Culture. The message struck a deep chord, especially among the younger athletes. Coaches and players repeatedly highlighted how important it was to champion integrity and hard work in an age where “shortcuts” increasingly tempt young people. The theme wasn’t just printed on banners , it showed in the discipline, fair play, and the increased awareness conversations happening around the Games.
The football finals added their own fireworks, especially after the announcement of cash prizes ₦500,000 for the first-place team, ₦300,000 for second, and ₦200,000 for third. The crowd roared as the envelopes were presented, and you could almost feel the pride swelling around the field.
This edition recorded more participant’s and spectators a number that reflects how the Games have grown far beyond a neighborhood event. The founder and convener, Seun Ayeni, said this year reminded him why AmuwoGames was created in the first place: to give young people real opportunities, direction, and a platform to show their talent.
He explained that 16 different sports were played this year, from football to cycling, chess, gravel and more, with over 600 athletes competing and 198 medalists emerging. Ayeni described it as one of the most inspiring editions yet, largely because of the support from the community and the Lagos State Sports Commission.
“The prizes were bigger this year, yes, but what stood out for me was the spirit,” Ayeni said. “Some of the athletes competing today were here two years ago and didn’t win anything. Today they are medalists. That’s what a champion’s mindset looks like you don’t quit because you didn’t win immediately. You keep going.”
His message echoed across the field: Amuwo has talent everywhere, but without grassroots platforms like these, many promising youths would remain unnoticed. He encouraged more organisations and leaders within the local government to replicate similar initiatives to keep nurturing the next generation of stars.
As the sun set on Iman College and the last group photos were taken, one thing was clear: AmuwoGames has become more than a sports festival. It is now a unifying moment for the entire local government a place where talent meets community, and where Amuwo’s spirit proudly shines through
