The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a condolence visit to the family of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, in Amuwo Odofin, following his burial.
Obi, who arrived at the Rufai family home, accompanied by former Super Eagles star Sylvanus Okpala, described the late football legend as more than just a sportsman, but “a patriot who brought pride and glory to Nigeria through his service on the field.”
He offered heartfelt condolences to the widow, children, and extended family members of the deceased, praying for God’s comfort and strength to carry them through the difficult period.
After signing the condolence register, Obi praised Rufai’s contributions to Nigeria’s football history, particularly his role in the 1994 African Cup of Nations victory and the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he stood tall as the Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper.
“Peter Rufai was a hero of his time, a man who represented the best of Nigerian football with dignity and discipline. His passing is not only a loss to his family, but to the entire sporting community and the nation as a whole,” Obi said.
He also emphasized the importance of remembering and celebrating national heroes who have inspired generations, urging Nigerians to continue to uphold the values of hard work, resilience, and unity that Rufai embodied.
The Rufai family expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Obi for honoring them with his presence and words of encouragement, describing his visit as a source of strength and solidarity in their time of grief.
