Monday, 25th March 2024, was a horrible day in the Amuwo-Odofin community as popular supermarket that serves a huge populace of the LGA was razed by fire.
The supermarket, which has thrived in providing its services to the community over the years, unfortunately, met a terrible fate today as the entire building went up in flames.
Nobody knows where the fire started from as everyone ran out of the building to save themselves, and could not salvage any of the goods in the supermarket in the process of running for their lives. It was said that the fire started at about 11am
The fire service came to their rescue but not at an immediate beck and call. There had to be at least 5 fire trucks present for the magnitude of the fire.
Asides from goods worth millions of naira in the building, there was someone trapped inside as she was unable to escape with the others.
She was said to have been ill earlier in the day and was advised not to go to work by her family, but she insisted. All attempts to rescue her seemed futile initially as the rescue team couldn’t pinpoint her exact location in the building as well as the hindrance by the intensity of the fire from the inside.
After over an hour, she was able to call out, telling someone she was in one of the convenience rooms in the building. The firefighters, as well as regular civilians, put their hands together to break walls and successfully pulled her out of the toilet on the top floor.
She was pulled out unconscious, barely breathing but alive with varying degree burns all over her body, and was rushed immediately to the hospital as there was a standby ambulance.
In the process of putting out the fire, one of the firemen collapsed and was promptly attended to by LASAMBUS and moved to a private hospital at Apple junction to receive adequate medical attention.
The firefighters, staff of Globus as well as other men around, battled the fire for over seven before being able to put it out but too much damage had already been done to the building as well as the goods. The fire raged for more than 12 hours and little fire was still seen in the building after 24 hours.
Unfortunately, the lady passed on getting to the hospital.
