Truck crushes motorcyclist, passenger to death in Lagos

An articulated truck has crushed a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger to death along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Iyana-Iba Flyover near the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo axis.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement issued through the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo.

According to the statement, preliminary findings indicated that the fully loaded truck was speeding from the Volkswagen axis inward Badagry when it struck a pedestrian and failed to stop.

In a further turn of events, a commercial motorcyclist, accompanied by a passenger, reportedly pursued the fleeing truck driver. However, the truck rammed into the motorcycle during the chase, killing both the rider and the passenger.

LASTMA described the incident as regrettable, noting that emergency response operatives from its night surveillance and monitoring team along the Badagry corridor were deployed to the scene.

The team evacuated the remains of the motorcyclist, who was trapped beneath the front tyre of the truck.

The truck driver was subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at Okokomaiko, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, for further investigation.

Authorities have urged motorists, especially truck drivers, to exercise caution and adhere strictly to speed regulations to prevent further loss of lives on Lagos roads.
