I woke up this morning to the rude reality that it remains a huge battle to leave my home peacefully to go about my lawful endeavour.
If you live in Festac, Amuwo Odofin and environs you’re probably sharing my pains and understand my situation.
As I got on the road leading to Oshodi Apapa highway en-route Orile at around 6:30am, I discovered that some motorists, including staff buses, school buses, private cars and, of course, led by the naturally unruly yellow buses, were already facing on-coming traffic on the wrong side of the road.
More than ever before, trucks, trailers and other articulated vehicles have effectively blocked the entire stretch of Durbar Road, pushing traffic as far back as Apple junction and effectively blocking residents of Jakande Estate, Amuwo-Odofin from leaving their homes for their daily pursuits.
Then, as usual, I also saw some LASMA officials in company of some police officers, all in a small shuttle bus painted in the colors of Lagos commercial vehicle trying to arrest one or two of these vehicles.
At this point, I cast my mind back to a few days leading to the general elections and after as well as the Christmas season where vehicles moved unhindered and there was no one driving on the wrong side of the road.
While this thought and several others ran through my mind, tens of minutes passed while still on the same spot, hoping some miracle will happen as I must report to work before 8:00am.
Curiously, I got out of my car and approached the LASMA and their security support, then I asked “do you think motorists would drive against traffic if these articulated vehicle did not park on the road irresponsibly?” Expectedly, I got a very rash response from one of the police men attached to the LASMA patrol. He said “why should cars pass through one way?”
With this response, I concluded that the Lagos State Government and the traffic law enforcement agents have all lost it. They appear to me clueless and lacking initiative to deal with this madness that is fast reducing the quality of life of the affect Lagosians.
It immediately sank into me that we (residents of Festac, Amuwo Odofin and its environs and indeed all legitimate users of the effect roads) would have to live with this for the rest of our lives? Hmm…
My honest thought is that there is a problem of illegal parking by this trucks, and the simple immediate but temporal solution is to ensure that these monsters are forced to park in such a manner that will still allow other users of the road move with a fair level of freedom, while the remote cause of the invasion by these monsters is handle with finality.
In the interim, however, leaving home and returning has been hellish. Leaving home is a daytime nightmare, returning home is a horrific puzzle that requires tact and a bit of astronomical physics to determine how to gain escape velocity.
As I wrote earlier, hoodlums have seized this opportunity to rub, maim and cause untold hardship. faeces litter the entire area, and we can only wait for the looming disaster to happen.
I am not certain if calling on Governor Ambode would help this ugly situation at this time, but I wish to draw the attention of Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu, to come to our rescue.
